LABO Multimedia Learning Modules (MLM) Development

downloadable full examples available

Customized Development

    • We developed during the last years an economical protocol that allows us to create customable Multimedia Learning Modules (MLMs).
    • The MLMs presented here are just a few examples available for demonstration. They have been created using some of the datasets and knowledge collected during the VAKHUM project.
    • MLM content currently focuses on osteology, arthrology and joint kinematics.

MLM Concept

    • Each MLM shows two components:

·            A theoretical multimedia presentation including oral explanations about a particular anatomical topic.

·            A laboratory presented as a 3D interactive scene that allows the user to visualize the structures described in the theoretical component of the MLM.

    • Both MLM elements should be used for better integration of the matter.

Examples of MLM: the knee joint and adjacent bones

    • The following examples illustrate MLM content about the femoral bone, the patella, the tibial bone, the knee joint and the knee joint kinematics.
    • Note that you probably need to install some (free) plug-ins and programs on your system (see Requirements and MLM use section below).
    • Remember that each MLM has two elements that are visualized in different interfaces (see MLM Concept above).
    •
    • MLM on femoral bone:

·          Theoretical lecture (zip, 11.8 Mbs).

·          Laboratory – full bone (3.6 Mbs).

·          Laboratory – distal epiphysis (2.6 Mbs).

    • MLM on patella bone:

·          Theoretical lecture (zip, 1.5 Mbs).

·          Laboratory – full bone (316 kbs).

    • MLM on tibial bone:

·          Theoretical lecture (zip, 7.5 Mbs).

·          Laboratory – full bone (1.1 Mbs).

·          Laboratory – proximal epiphysis (1.2 Mbs).

    • MLM on knee joint morphology:

·          Theoretical lecture (zip, 8.9 Mbs).

·          Laboratory – full bone (3.7 Mbs).

    • MLM on knee joint kinematics:

·          Theoretical lecture (zip, 3.9 Mbs).

·          Laboratory – femoro-patellar joint (1.1 Mbs).

Requirements and MLM use

 How to decompress *.zip file?

    • Some of the above MLM links will allow you to download compressed files (ZIP format) on your system.
    • Once downloaded you must decompress the zip files. A free compress/decompress program is available from http://www.winzip.com/.

How to use MLM theoretical components?

    • After decompression, a VAKHUM directory is created on your disk (e.g. c:\your_directory\VAKHUM\.
    • This directory will show

·                  A *.SMI file (e.g. c:\your_directory\VAKHUM\EN200.SMI), which is the main file of the current tutorial. Simply double-click on that file icon to start the class.

·                  A subdirectory (e.g. c:\your_directory\VAKHUM\EN200\) that contains the multimedia file (*.RM) and the table-of-content file (*.RT).

    • If the animations are not starting on your machine when you are clicking on the *.SMI file then you probably have to install an appropriate video TSCC codec: the latter is available www.techsmith.com/download.asp.
    •
    • Please, be cautious:

·                  You can rename *.SMI files, but do not alter their SMI extension.

·                  Do not rename both *.RM and *.RT file or problems will certainly appear to start the tutorials.

How to use the MLM interactive 3D component?

    • These elements are not compressed.
    • To visualize them you need a VRML viewer.
    • Though it is not in development anymore, we advice you to use the following (free) VRML viewer: Cosmo Player (http://www.cai.com/cosmo/).
    • Plenty of other viewers are freely available from the Internet (see: www.web3d.org/vrml/browpi.htm).
    • Use of the 3D interface requests some training. Unfortunately, it is impossible to explain the interface available for each particular VRML viewer. Some information about the use of Cosmo Player is available from here.
