This 24-hour foundation course in English grammar is based (mainly though not exclusively) on M. Swan's Practical English Usage and Foundations of English Grammar (ACCO).

At this stage the approach to grammar is essentially normative. Other aspects of the course cover an introduction to English phonology and vocabulary development.

The course is taught in English. Basic proficiency is therefore a requisite for successful enrolment.

The Virtual University Website contains a number of slide shows for personal work allowing students to brush up their basic English,
to become aware of fundamental differences between English and French, and to avoid recurrent errors.

The course is supported by exercises, homework, guidance sessions and reading assignments.

Books required :

J.-P. van Noppen and Michael SWAN

M. Swan : Practical English Usage. Oxford University Press, (2005 ed., indispensable resource for BA1 course).

D. Crystal : The English Language. Harmondsworth: Penguin Books (to be read for discussion at the oral exam).

X. Dekeyser (et al.): Foundations of English Grammar. Antwerpen: DNB (old ed.) / Leuven: Acco, 2004 (new ed.) (Main reference book in BA1 and BA2).

The Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture  or The Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English  (necessary for vocabulary study and development)

A volume of course notes ("LISA") is available at the University bookshop (Avenue Paul Héger, near the bus stop) and online.

   a. The "Pink Pages" contain practical advice about what to buy and how to work.
   b. The "White Pages" contain the examples and figures to be studied as part of the grammar course.
The exercises accompanying this course are of five kinds:
   c. "Green Pages" with exercises on the grammar course, with Ms. Kemlo (1st term).
   d. "Blue Pages" with exercises on IPA reading and pronunciation, with Ms. Louckx (2nd term)
   e. "Orange Pages" with a list of words to be studied and practised individually (or with the guidance counsellor)
   f. "Yellow Pages" with exercises in translation based on Contrastive and Error Analysis.
   g. A separate course in spoken English will be taught by the Plan Langues during the second term, and will be sanctioned by  a separate exam.

Copies of the corresponding PowerPoint slide shows can be consulted via the Virtual University website.

Examinations for this course :

A written test in January will ascertain the students' knowledge of the vocabulary (to be studied in the orange pages) and their understanding of the grammar.
As part of this test resorts to translation, it requires knowledge of French as well as English.

An oral exam at the end of the year (to be prepared by the reading of The English Language ) will assess the students' proficiency in spoken English

The Plan Langues course will be sanctioned by a separate exam and receive a grade independent from Prof. van Noppen's course.

Guidance Students will help BA1 students
prepare for the "2000 words vocabulary" and the "Crystal : The English Language " exams.
