FIRST TERM (September - December)
|
This 24-hour course will place a heavier emphasis on grammar (phrase and sentence patterns, information management) (Click here for an outline of the grammar component)
There wil be 24 hours of exercises (grammar, 1st term) and a 2nd-term unit on English phonology / orthophony.
An additional seminar (1 h/week, in groups, 1st and 2nd term) will be organised to help students prepare the oral exam on Plag & C°'s Introduction to E. Linguistics.
Two volumes of course notes (grammar and orthophony "syllabi") are for sale at the P.U.B.
OTHER BOOKS REQUIRED :
M. Swan : Practical English Usage. Oxford University Press, (1995 ed., the same as in English 101 last year, or new 2005 ed.).
X. Dekeyser (et al.): Foundations of English Grammar. Leuven: Acco (newest ed.).
COMPULSORY READING :
I. Plag (et al.) : Introduction to English Linguistics. Berlin : Mouton de Gruyter, 2009.

A written exam will ascertain the (theoretical and practical) understanding of the grammar component
An oral/written exam (with Ms. Kemlo) will ascertain knowledge and understanding of pronunciation and intonation
An oral exam at the end of the year : a set of questions question about the book (Introduction to English Linguistics, 2009)
The Plan Langues course will be sanctioned by a separate exam and receive a grade independent from Prof. van Noppen's course.
