Etude synchronique de la linguistique anglaise 1  

The 24-hour course will be taught in the first term, and seek to consolidate language skills (Grammar, the sound system, spelling, vocabulary + exercises) so as to reach advanced proficiency.  A major component will deal with the grammar of the verb phrase.

Course notes ("LISA") and required books are available from the P.U.B. bookshop and online.
PowerPoint slide shows with course materials and for personal work can be downloaded by registered students via the Virtual University website.

During the second term, students will be given the opportunity to perfect their speaking and listening skills via the Plan Langues and become conversant with the International Phonetic Alphabet. The course involves a reading assignment and personal vocabulary work. Guidance is provided for both. Assessment will take the form of a written exam (at the end of first term) and an oral exam (at the end of second term).

Etude synchronique de la linguistique anglaise 2

This 24-hour course will place a heavier emphasis on advanced grammar (NP, VP and sentence patterns, information management) from a more descriptive perspective.

There wil be 12+24 = 36 hours of exercises (12 grammar in first term, + 24 orthophony during second term)

In addition, students must read a book (Plag & C° : Introduction to English Linguistics).  Expert help and documentation will be offered.

Two volumes of course notes (orthophony and grammar) are now available at the P.U.B. bookshop

Etude approfondie de la linguistique anglaise :
Developing Pragmastylistic Competence

This course aims at developing awareness, and in some cases command, of language variety. The course will focus on the idea of style as situation-conditioned choice, and seek to illustrate how different communicative constraints condition choices from the speaker's/writer's repertoire.

Assessment will be based on in-term assignments, a written exam on theory, and an oral exam focusing more closely on personal proficiency and research skill.
