A PROJECT OF RESEARCH CONCERNING THE IDENTIFICATION VALUE OF NON-METRICAL TRAITS IN A BELGIAN AND AN ITALIAN POPULATION

Non metrical traits are localized morphological variants of the human skeleton that can be observed in the cranial and in the postcranial districts. Regardless from their genetic or epigenetic origin, their presence provides a theoretical identification tool because, although non strictly personal, they can be helpful to narrow down the range of possible identities, whenever unidentified human remains are found out. The recognition of such traits in ante-mortem radiological images could be in fact one important piece in the overall puzzle-process of the personal identification, that obviously involve multiple aspects. In the present project of study, two populations will be analyzed: a Central Europe population (Belgian) and a Southern Europe population (Italian).
