Terwijl overal ter wereld gletsjers aan het smelten zijn door de stijgende temperaturen, is de Karakorumgletsjer in Pakistan gegroeid. Dat zegt de Franse gletsjerkundige Julie Gardelle. Maar haar opvallende vondst wordt genuanceerd door Frank Pattyn van de ULB: 'Dat de gletsjers in en rond het Himalyagebergte minder snel smelten, was al eerder bekend. Het groeien van de Karakorumgletsjer is mogelijk gewoon te wijten aan een grotere hoeveelheid neerslag.'

  41. Interview Radio 1: Nieuwe Feiten: 8 Maart 2011 - Het lijkt simpel als pompwater. Er drijven ijsbergen rond waarvan het zoete water langzaam wegloopt in de oceanen. Waarom wordt dat bevroren water niet naar gebieden gesleept waar te weinig drinkwater is? Het is eerder geprobeerd - in de jaren '70 van Antartica naar Saoedi-Arabië bijvoorbeeld - maar dat mislukte. Nu denkt de Franse ingenieur Georges Mougin dat het met de hedendaagse technologie wel moet lukken. In een 3D-simulatietest werd een ijsberg succesvol van Newfoundland (Canada) naar de Canarische eilanden gesleept. Met een gemiddelde snelheid van 2 km/uur zou die na goed 140 dagen ter bestemming moeten zijn, en er zou nog 2/3 van de oorspronkelijke ijsmassa over zijn.
